UPPER DUBLIN >> The school board approved the appointment of Dr. Steven Yanni as the district’s new superintendent at its May 14 meeting.

Yanni will begin work in the district July 5, with the term length on his contract concluding June 30, 2023. His annual salary will be $198,000.

He succeeds Dr. Deborah Wheeler, who is leaving the district for retirement. Yanni was present at the board’s May 14 meeting as an observer but was given the chance to address the board and the public following his appointment.

“I’d like to thank the board for the confidence they placed in me to lead the district as your next superintendent,” Yanni said. “I am looking forward to being a part of the School District of Upper Dublin and charting a new course.”

Yanni’s selection concludes an exhaustive search that began in January, when Wheeler notified the district that she was retiring effective July 4. She had served as the district’s superintendent for the past four school years.

The district enlisted the Chester County Intermediate Unit to lead the search process. Forty applications were received for the position, with 17 candidates vying for the position in first-round interviews. Yanni became the board’s choice after clearing a third round of interviews.

Yanni’s selection was formally announced by the district on May 7.

“This has been a very long process and very time-consuming for the board,” board President Art Levinowitz said about the superintendent’s search. “I think it was all worth the time we put into this process.”

“I’m thrilled that Dr. Yanni found us and that we found Dr. Yanni,” board member Sara Rothman added. “Dr. Yanni is an amazing fit for Upper Dublin.

“When we were looking for the right superintendent, it’s wasn’t just about someone who checked off the boxes. It’s [about having a] personality that’s going to be used to inspire our students, our community and our staff,” she added. “I see all of those traits in Dr. Yanni.”

Yanni has served as the superintendent of the New Hope-Solebury School District since December 2015. He previously served as its assistant superintendent from 2013 to 2015.

Prior to his work in New Hope-Solebury, Yanni served as director of curriculum and as an elementary school principal for the East Pennsboro School District. He has also served as an elementary and middle school teacher in the Gaston County Schools district in North Carolina and the Twin Valley School District in Berks County.

Yanni said he has already begun transitional work with Wheeler.
