MANAYUNK >> Back in the mid 1990s, stylist Artur Kirsh began his career working in one of the area’s top salons in Manayunk. More than 20 years later, nationally celebrated Kirsh is back on Main Street doing what he does best at Artur Kirsh Salon.

Kirsh, who was born in Russia, was exposed to the world of hair at an early age.

“My father was a well-known actor in Russia, where there was a hair salon in which actors would hang out,” Kirsh said. “When I was 16, I became interested in hair and was inspired by the stylists who worked at the salon.”

In 1994, at the age of 18, he moved to New York, where he quickly made a name for himself as a promising young talent on the rise. After gaining experience at a Manhattan studio, Kirsh moved to Philadelphia and began the process of transforming himself into the star he is today. His first hair studio in Center City, Studio CL, was an inspired breed in hair design. The studio opened in the spring of 2005 and quickly garnered a reputation among Philadelphians and local “celebutants” by forgoing convention.

Specializing in coloring and a style called “dry cutting,” Kirsh, who also operates Artur Kirsh Salon & Span at The Bellevue on Broad Street in Philadelphia, has a reputation in the Philadelphia fashion circle. He is the go-to stylist for models and local celebrities. Over the years, he has styled luminaries who range from stars from the local CBS3 news team to national broadcast personalities at NBC, CBS and ABC. Celebrities in his styling repertoire include Celine Dion, Kathy Griffin, Nicole Miller and Ken Downing. He has styled the supermodels of New York and Milan’s Fashion Weeks, the Chanel Trunk Show, Christian Louboutin Fashion Show at Neiman Marcus, the Carmen Marc Valvo Fashion Show and the Derek Lam Fashion Show.

For all of his national and international renown, however, Artur Kirsh retains a humble approach to his work and a selfless demeanor to his person.

The Artur Kirsh Salon in Manayunk, which opened Feb. 6, occupies approximately 5,000 square feet of space and offers a full range of services, including cuts, blow-dries, coloring and makeup. The space is large enough to accommodate any kind of hair or makeup party.

In March, Kirsh’s friends Pamela and Michael Katz will open “All Things Fabulous” boutique, offering gifts, jewelry, candles, home goods and children’s items.

“What I love most about the new salon is its open space and natural light,” Kirsh added. “It feels like downtown Manhattan. I am thrilled for my staff and our clients who will enjoy a big city salon experience right here on Main Street.”

Artur Kirsh Salon is located at 4360 Main St., Manayunk. For more information, call 215-496-0604 or visit arturkirshsalon.com.
