GOLDEN WEDDING AT EARLINGTON — A very pretty affair took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Gerhart, of Earlington, on New Year's Day, when all their children and grandchildren and other close relatives gathered to celebrate the golden anniversary of this couple, who, though well advanced in years, are still as well preserved as the average of those who have not as yet attained so grand a record of sailing on the matrimonial sea ... It may be of note that Mr. Gerhart is the second in line of the generation of Gerharts to have attained this record of marital life, his parents, Daniel F. Gerhart and wife, having had their 50th anniversary in the fall of 1897. 

YOUNG GIRL IN SERIOUS CONDITION FROM BURNS — Late reports from Grand View Hospital, Sellersville, are that Esther Worman is in a critical condition, having inhaled too much smoke in a very unfortunate accident which occurred about 9 o'clock last Tuesday forenoon.

The girl, who is 12 years of age, is a daughter of Pierson Worman, but makes her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Hunsberger, at Main and Walnut streets, Souderton. She was standing at the stove, and some part of her dress caught fire, the flames shooting upward and badly burning her face and arms, and in a few seconds had done their cruel work. 

TELFORD — Committees are out soliciting funds for the new piano, which will be installed in the lodge room, in the Buick building. This piano will be for the use of the four lodges which meet there. Help them along by giving your mite ... Frank M. Kuhn, proprietor of the County Line House, has bought the hotel property from the present owners, Jonas G. Barndt and Hilary B. Gerhard, at private figures. Mr. Kuhn will open a first class restaurant and boarding house. Success in the new venture. 

TOWN TOPICS — Miss Mae, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Crouthamel, will take up a course of study in a business college, having quit the local High School. She was a member of the Sophomore Class ... F. G. Wile, of near the Indian Creek Reformed church, is the census enumerator for Souderton Borough, and is now on the job asking many questions.

HAYCOCK MOUNTAIN FOR FOREST PRESERVE — A famous spring where water bubbles up as though boiling, attracted considerable attention. This spring is at an ideal location, suitable for camping purposes, one of the ends to be attained through the project ... The fine variety of trees, hickory, walnut, maple, chestnut, willow and others, was admired by the Commission, who considered it altogether worth while to preserve them.

FIRE AT TODD MOTOR CO. — A fire broke out in the car reconditioning area of the Todd Motor Co., Rt. 309 between Rt. 113 and Reliance road, shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

By press time the fire was raging out of control with both the Telford and Souderton fire companies fighting the blaze in sub-freezing weather ... It seemed apparent that the entire building would be destroyed, but that none of the other Todd buildings were in immediate danger. 

BEVERAGE BOTTLES REPORTED STOLEN — Leon Ziegler, proprietor of the North Penn Beverage Co., Souderton, this week offered a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons seen pilfering cases of empty beverage bottles from his Cherry lane establishment the night of Dec. 30.

SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS RISE AS OF JAN. 1 — Social Security beneficiaries need not apply for the 15 percent benefit increase just signed into law by President Nixon ... About one out of every eight Americans is now receiving a social security check each month, Commissioner Ball said. 

GIRL SCOUTS PLAN ANNUAL COOKIE SALE — The 1970 variety of cookies include vanilla butter flavor, fudge, cookie mints, assorted sandwiches, and peanut butter. The price per box is 50 cents, of which the troop receives 8.3¢ per box. 

LANSDALE POSTMASTER DIES AFTER FALL — Richard M. Bitner, Lansdale borough postmaster for the past 15 years, died Sunday as the result of injuries suffered December 27 in a fall on an icy Lansdale sidewalk ... Between 1924 and 1955, Mr. Bitner operated pharmacies at various locations in Lansdale ... Mr. Bitner served as a member of the Lansdale Borough Council for 11 years prior to his acceptance of the postmaster position.
