Since no one asked me to deliver a commencement speech this year, an obvious oversight, I’d like to offer the belated advice I would have shared if I’d been called to whittle down life into one neat package.

Until February of 2018, Michael Buono Jr., was the popular, classy manager/host at Teca in Newtown Square, carrying on a family tradition. His dad, also named Michael Buono, has popped this cork before. Until recently he was a peerless host/manager for more than 30 years at Vickers Tavern in Lionville, Chester County, located in a historic building that was a stop on the Underground Railroad in the mid-1800s. The elder Buono grew up on the island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, about 30 miles from the city of Naples, Italy.

It was the fourth play in a little over a week that I’d seen that told women’s stories. The other three were more serious- the evolving relationship of a mother and daughter, three sisters struggling to find themselves in a world of men, a young author trying to survive in the wake of something she wrote after the sexual scandal of her boss. “Café Puttanesca” is also about sex, but it is about the lighter side. It  is a joyful reminiscence of three “ladies of the night,” as they hang out in a café in Amsterdam in the Red Light District,  three years after the end of World War II.

When I got married, my husband gave me a $5 fake engagement ring, knowing growing up in a jeweler’s family, I related sparkly gems to issues better left on a therapist’s couch.
