Take It Outdoors Adventures, a recreational outfitter and service company based in Pottstown, is providing summertime programs to help the community experience the Schuylkill River beyond paddling.
In addition to the company’s usual services such as guided boat trips and a free bike share, Take It Outdoors added two new programs this season to help people enjoy the river in different ways.
A kayak fishing program combines two recreational activities into one. Anglers will be able to throw lines from inside a rented kayak through the outfitter. A watershed discovery program makes it possible for families to learn about the local environment from on water. Below are more details about each of these programs.
Take It Outdoors is offering an Early Bird Kayak Fishing program on select Saturdays throughout the summer. Anglers who participate will receive a 50% discount on boat rentals and shuttle services. Canoes and fishing kayaks will be available for anglers to use on the river.
Take It Outdoors Director Noah Phillips said sit-on-top kayaks are often used for fishing. The boats are designed so paddlers sit on top with their legs exposed verses sitting inside of an enclosed area.
“It provides more mobility. You get to your gear easier and it’s just a lot easier for fishing,” Phillips said.
To participate in the program, anglers just need to bring proof of their fishing license and any fishing equipment needed such as poles and lures. Then they can rent a single kayak for $25 or a canoe for $45 from Take It Outdoors.
The boat rental also includes a paddle, life vest, and shuttle service. Participants will leave their vehicles at Take It Outdoors in Pottstown, then they and all their gear will be shuttled to the Union Meadows Park launch area in Douglassville. Anglers will paddle down the river back to Pottstown, hopefully while catching a few fish. This program is available at 8 a.m. on July 24, July 25, Aug. 7, and Aug. 8.
Take It Outdoors has ordered more sit-on-tap kayaks to use this fall for additional fishing programs. The goal is to offer kayak fishing classes. One class will be designed for experienced anglers who want to try fishing from a kayak. There will also be classes for people with limited fishing experience and they’ll be able borrow all equipment.
“That will be more geared toward children and families,” Phillips said.

Take It Outdoors is partnering with the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area to help people explore the plants and animals of the river while paddling.
Watershed Discovery is a self-guided paddling experience along the river when families use exploratory tools to learn about wildlife. Participants use binoculars and a wildlife ID key to learn about the region’s plants and animals as they paddle.
“In today’s world, our viewpoint of the river is often from roads and highways. The watershed program enables families and individuals to experience the river from the water to observe wildlife in the natural world and from a new perspective,” said Sarah Crothers, Schuylkill River Greenways education director.
Children 13 and under who turn in a completed bingo card about what they see during the nature journey will receive a take-home Schuylkill Explorers Aquatic Kit. The kit includes a clipboard with activities like a watershed scavenger hunt, cloud watcher, watershed map, and magnifying glass for at-home exploration of the Schuylkill River Watershed. Kits are available as quantities allow.
The Watershed Discovery program will run this summer until Labor Day.
