The Pennsylvania Montgomery County Chapter Democratic Black Caucus along with Community Partners is hosting its first Juneteenth Block Party Celebration.
The Block Party will be held on the 300-400 Block of Swede Street, between Main Street and Airy Street (GPS reference: 2 E Airy Street in Norristown, PA 19401.)
The event will start at 5 pm and will end at 9 pm. This community celebration will include the history of Juneteenth through dance with a dance troupe led by Antoinette Coward-Gilmore, Norristown’s own poet, Sharon Booker complimented by PA Renowned Musician and Drummer Ricardo Tucker Sr., DJ Steve, live Jazz with Azz One and Jada Fete, games, food and guest speakers. We will also be recognizing the artists of the new Black Lives Matter mural in front of the Montgomery County Courthouse.
As the nation recognizes the significance of Juneteenth, we must be reminded of and celebrate its historic relevance. On September 22nd, 1862 The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
It wasn’t until almost 3 years later that American slaves in the most remote states were actually freed with the assistance of General Grainger on June 19th 1865. This day would come to be known as Juneteenth. Join us as we commemorate freedom of Black American Slaves.
This is a non-partison event. We invite all elected representatives of the people of Montgomery County to attend.
