SOUDERTON — When Lumiere Candle Studio moved in September into its new location on Main Street in Souderton, it was a return to the town where the business got its start.

It began as Brandon's Candles, LLC, which made candles that were sold online, along with being available at events including Souderton's Third Fridays, Will Conner, studio manager, said.

Lumiere, which lets people make their own customized candles, was started after Brandon's customers said they'd like to learn how to make candles and asked about additional scents, he said.

Before moving to its current location, Lumiere was on Route 73 in Skippack, he said.

"It did have a lot of popularity in the Montgomery County, Bucks County area, so that's why we moved it back up to Souderton," Conner said.

Customers start off by choosing the type and size of the jar in which they will make the candle, he said.

"Once you pick out a jar you would like, you then get to pick out what type of scents you would like to put in the candles," Conner said.

Customers also choose the color of the candle.

Under the COVID-19 conditions, customers are required to wear a face covering, there is social distancing, additional cleaning and sanitation between appointments and candle making times are currently by reservation only.

The people coming to make candles include ones on family outings, groups of friends and people on a date, Conner said.

It's not only about candle making, he said.

"You sit, you talk, and you have a good time," he said.

People can also make the candle, go get a meal at a restaurant, then return to pick up the candle, he said.

Depending on the size, it can take up to two hours for the candle to cool, information on Lumiere's website says.

There are more than 100 scents to be chosen from to be used in the candles, the site says.

"The one we get the most questions about is a scent called very sexy men," Conner said. "It's basically just a cologne, but the name catches people."

There are seasonal favorites, such as pumpkin in the fall and balsam and gingerbread during the Christmas season, he said.

"In the spring, we'll see a lot more floral scents, like lavender, lilac, roses, that sort of a thing," Conner said.

The Souderton Lumiere Candle Studio is open 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays, noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. It includes a showroom for Brandon's Candles, which are also sold there.

There are also Lumiere Candle Studio locations in the Old City section of Philadelphia and in Baltimore, Md.
