UPPER GWYNEDD — With a curveball that Montgomery Township could never quite get a bead on, Garrett Moyer whirled Harleysville to a 7-2 victory in a must-win Bux-Mont Connie Mack A playoff contest at Hostelley Field Wednesday night.

“I love it,” Moyer said of throwing in the postseason, “going out there and battling. You don’t know what’s gonna happen. It’s fun - competition.”

With the win, No. 8 Harleysville advanced to Thursday night’s action. Fifth-seeded Montgomery saw its season come to a close.

“We got 10-runned (by Upper Moreland Tuesday) so the attitude was to not leave anything out there,” said Moyer, a sophomore at Souderton Area High. “We just wanted to do everything we could to win.”

Moyer did plenty, going the distance and keeping Montgomery scoreless all the way until the seventh. The right-hander allowed two earned runs off of seven hits while striking out four and walking one with one hit batter.

In a three-inning stretch from the fourth to sixth, while Harleysville built a substantial lead, Moyer allowed just one hit.

“I was feeling it,” he said. “It was fun.

“We needed this. If we lost, we would have gone home and that would have been tough.”

Big Start >> Harleysville’s offense struck in the third against Montgomery starter Owen Doran, with Moyer starting things off with a single down the right-field line.

Krieg Pierce singled to the gap in left center and Trevor Valentine drew a walk to load the bases.

With two outs, Jude Kane ripped a single to left to score two, and Joe Nase soon reached on an error as another run scored to boost the lead to 3-0.

Calvin Radcliff added an RBI single to cap the inning.

In the fifth, Justin DiCesare walked and scored on an error, and in the sixth, Andrew Trumbore drove in two with a knock up the middle, as the gap widened to 7-0.

Montgomery kept swinging, with Sean Smith, Luke Cody and Earl Kelly coming up with hits in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-2.

But Moyer finished things out and Harleysville advanced.

“We now have the stamina to win,” Moyer said of the victory.
